(Re)Imagining America: A Speaker Series at Notre Dame

The Department of American Studies at the University of Notre Dame is pleased to announce a new speaker series, (Re)Imagining America, to take place from spring 2009-spring 2010.  These talks will bring scholars and artists from a variety of fields who challenge dominant conceptions of what it means to be—or call oneself—“American” to Notre Dame.  By focusing on cutting-edge scholarship and cultural production, this series seeks to engage the campus and community with the critical questions raised by the field of American studies. 

The inaugural speaker of the (Re)Imagining America series will be renowned Chicana muralist and educator Judy Baca on April 14th, 2009.  Professor Baca will discuss her project, "Land and Memory: The History of the Los Angeles River and The Great Wall of Los Angeles.”  Over the following year we will welcome speakers whose work, like Baca’s, explores the intersections of race, class, gender, and sexuality in the United States and beyond.
