Winterim in New Orleans: "Don't Forget New Orleans"
Aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita

It has been three years since Hurricane Katrina struck the city of New Orleans. For residents in the lower 9th Ward in particular, the return, rebuilding, and recovery have been slow, if not nonexistent. Residents who are able to return are now out of the national spotlight. Their everyday struggles are seemingly marginalized in the city's overall effort to recover. And yet there are inherent lessons which emerge from this national tragedy.

Two courses offered during Winterim, a January mini-term, place UWM students in residence in New Orleans.  Their research projects focus on the return, recovery and transformation of the New Orleans community of the lower 9th Ward. "Multicultural America" and "Applications of Anthropology" offer a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary exploration of U.S. ethnic and racial identities and experiences, with special attention focused on the cultural history of New Orleans and the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Both courses will be held on site in the New Orleans area. This living and learning experience supports students' learning about New Orleans' diversity. Students will complete assignments based on anthropological fieldwork methods and the real life stories of people in New Orleans. Service-learning placements at agencies in the New Orleans area will focus on restoration, relief, and recovery efforts.

Both classes are affiliated with the Department of Anthropology and the Cultures and Communities program.  For more information visit http://www4.uwm.edu/acad_aff/no/index.cfm.
