Featured Program

Arts & Environment Initiative
The Arts & Environment Initiative, part of Allegheny’s Center for Economic and Environmental Development, uses art to promote regional revitalization and beautification. The initiative works with local community partners to identify environmental problems and implement solutions. For example, the “Read Between the Signs” project, a partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, involved the design and fabrication of a 1200 X 8 foot sculptural relief made of discarded road signs that appears at the gateway to Meadville. The relief is attached to an existing chain-link fence surrounding the PennDOT storage lot and depicts images and forms that reference the Allegheny Mountains, the French Creek watershed, roads, PennDOT workers, farms and forests. Allegheny College also offers a special minor in Art and the Enviroment.
