Community and Civic Engagement Initiative, College of Liberal Arts
This initiative in the college began in Fall 2006 with the goal of promoting greater collaboration among faculty in the college and expanding collaboration with community partners in the support of the land-grant university’s historic commitment of service to the community. The Community and Civic Engagement Initiative is led by faculty members, whose research and teaching is enriched by connections with community partners to improve the communities served. Although many activities of the initiative are rooted in local communities, the initiative includes national and international partners and projects.
Dean Anne-Katrin Gramberg, provides $5,000 annual stipends to faculty representatives from departments in the college to serve on a two-year Civic Engagement Planning Committee. This committee has been responsible for creating the community and civic engagement curriculum for Learning Communities; designing a Summer Academy to teach faculty how to meet partners and combine their community engagement with their research and teaching; develop a service learning curriculum; sponsor student essay and You-Tube contests; expand university and community partnerships; and lead projects that involve faculty and student collaboration across disciplines.
The Community and Civic Engagement Initiative offers a week-long Summer Academy that pays faculty a $1,500 stipend to immerse themselves in redesigning a course to include a service learning component, identifying and working with community partners, and collaborating with colleagues on community-based projects.
Beginning in Fall 2008, the college has awarded titled professorships, known as College of Liberal Arts Engaged Scholars, to faculty, whose research, teaching, and community engagement are exemplary and who serve as mentors to new faculty.
