Featured Program

Beloit College and the Beloit Public Library jointly received a matching grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to host The Big Read in Beloit. The two organizations were among 269 nonprofit organizations―including arts, culture, and science organizations; libraries; and municipalities―to receive a grant to host a Big Read project for the 2009/2010 academic year.  

The Big Read gives communities the opportunity to come together to read, discuss, and celebrate one of 30 selections from U.S. and world literature. In Beloit, the program focused on To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, with events held at a variety of locations throughout Beloit. 

In Beloit, the events integrated local history as well, in the form of photographs and oral histories from the Fairbanks Flats.  The “Flats” are apartments built by the Beloit Corporation, a paper-making machinery company, for its workers.  The workers were recruited from African-American communities in Mississippi.  Their descendents now make up some of Beloit’s African-American community.  Photographers in the 1920s through the 1940s documented the apartment complex and its inhabitants, and oral historians conducted research there later on.  These archived images and testimonies formed part of the conversations about To Kill a Mockingbird.
