The Gillioz ‘Theatre Beautiful’
A glorious movie palace in the 1920s, the Gillioz Theater in downtown Springfield, Missouri, had fallen into disrepair. After extension renovation, it re-opened in October, 2006. The opening was marked by Encore 2006, 16 days of special events uniting Missouri State University's College of Arts and Letters with the Gillioz Theatre Board of Directors.

As part of the re-opening, faculty and graduate students at Missouri State University collaborated with local organizations on the production of a book about the history of the theater and of downtown Springfield. The book, titled “The Gillioz ‘Theatre Beautiful’: Celebrating Springfield’s Theatre History, 1926-2006,” was researched and composed by students and their English professor, Dr. Jim Baumlin, in a graduate-level English seminar. The book traces both the theater’s and the city’s history by recounting the many live acts and films that graced the theater’s stage and screen and by exploring the cultural and economic impact of theatrical entertainments on Springfield and the Ozarks. The book is arguably the most detailed study published to date on the subject of downtown Springfield.
