Public Humanities Collaborative

The Public Humanities Collaborative currently has four research initiatives, which raise the following questions:

How do the humanities help build civic capacity?
Sponsored by the Charles F. Kettering Foundation, this project is designed to help Michigan citizens grapple with issues of concern in agriculture and natural resources. Public dialogue and deliberation are important rhetorical foundations of the humanities’ public purpose.  Issues of concern include fresh unprocessed whole milk in Michigan, urban deer culling, and the rising cost of food, which is the focus of an issue booklet to be used in state-wide public forums scheduled for this year.

In what ways does Photovoice serve as an agent for civic participation and social change?
From January through April 2008 long-time residents of East Lansing and students from MSU’s Residential College in the Arts and Humanities adopted the Photovoice technique, and used cameras to explore their neighborhoods. The photographers gathered weekly to discuss their pictures. They gradually moved beyond the stereotypes and misimpressions that often cloud town-gown relations. In another project, religious and civic leaders from the West African nation of Mali participated in a Photovoice initiative during their two-week visit to Michigan. Their photographs helped them reflect more deeply on ways to strengthen civil society through dialogue on faith and community.

What roles can archival and museum collections play in advancing public responsibilities of academics and intellectuals?
The gift of Robert Coles archive to MSU Library’s Special Collections consists of more than 90,000 pages of correspondence spanning five decades and most of the hand-written manuscripts of Dr. Coles’ 80+ books. While Coles is best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning books on children’s moral, political, and spiritual sensibilities, he is equally esteemed and recognized as an eloquent spokesperson for community service, civil rights, and the public responsibilities of academics, writers, and artists.

Do arts education and cultural exposure correlate significantly with entrepreneurial success in innovative sciences and technology?
A Cultural Creativity Research Group is designing a survey to determine if early exposure to the arts contributes to creative potential of children, thereby enhancing problem-solving and critical thinking skills necessary to the Information Age. The Research Group wants to test its hypothesis that childhood arts education and continuing immersion in the arts in adulthood may serve as a creative capacity generator for high-tech sciences and industries.
