Oregon Inmates, College Students take Classes Together
Under the direction of English professor, Steven Shankman, a group of Honors College students from the University of Oregon is running a book drive to build up the library at the Oregon State Penitentiary. The drive comes after the students took his literature class on Dostoevsky’s “Crime and Punishment” alongside a group of inmates as part of the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program. The program started in spring 2007 and is supported in part from contributions from Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Community Engagement. Shankman developed and taught the 11-week course that combined 15 Clark Honors College students with 15 students inside the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem.
The students are helping spruce up the library and were among the first to take part in the new state program, going to Salem once a week to take a literature and ethics class alongside a group of inmates. Now they're gathering books to help their former classmates maintain their newfound appreciation of literature. Katherine Philipson, a sophomore majoring in international studies, said the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program allowed her to see prisoners and the prison system in a different light. She was impressed with the thoughtfulness inmates brought to the class. “I think it’s a wonderful program in that it brings students together with people that are in prison and allows them to get to know one another and break down a lot of the stereotypes and barriers that we have,” Philipson said. She said inmates are particularly interested in books on science and math, history, art, foreign language instruction and classic literature.
Steven Shankman is a Distinguished Professor of English and Classics in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Oregon and Director of the Oregon Humanities Center. He is also a participating faculty member in the Comparative Literature program at the University. In 2007 he was named Chair of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).
