Letras y Arte: Literacy and Art
Co-taught by Professors Anthony Ortega and Joan Armon, “Letras y Arte: Literacy and Art” is a three-week summer session course focusing on the historical context of work by artists who promote social justice. Building on Regis’ commitment to social justice and service, this course includes a service learning component: during the final week of class, Regis students teach writing, printmaking, bookmaking, and the visual elements (line, color, shape, and texture) to children from the local Latino community. Through the creation of handmade books, the children have the opportunity to express their cultural heritage and to tell their own stories – ones often overlooked in the local schools where standardized testing restricts writing to assigned topics. The class culminates with an evening celebration where the children present the books to their families and loved ones.

OutRegis!
Responding to an appeal from current and prospective students for an active theatre club, Professor Janna Goodwin helped to create and advise OutRegis!, a campus and community-based performing arts ensemble that uses “outrageous” comedy to stimulate dialogue about issues such as difference, stigma, and micro-aggressions that tend to be grounded in unchallenged attitudes about race, class, gender, sexual orientation and intellectual ability. Its first performance, “I Can’t Believe They Said That!” which dealt with racial issues on campus, concluded with a “diversity dialogue” with the audience, collaboratively facilitated by the Office on Diversity and the Regis-based Institute on the Common Good. Following the group’s early success, OutRegis! received support – in the form of a campus outreach liaison – from the Regis Center for Service Learning. . By the end of the first year, OutRegis! had produced an off-campus community event, inviting teenagers from the Five Points neighborhood’s Denver Venture Charter School to a free Sunday workshop at the Crossroads Theatre. This was funded by the Regis University Student Government Association and the Center for Service Learning.

OutRegis! is dedicated to illuminating and reducing the isolating effects of stigmatizing and marginalizing experiences through the sharing of personal experiences, through writing, collaboration, lively rehearsal processes, boundary-challenging, truthful, comic performances, and dialogue. Recognizing that campus-community arts initiatives are most likely to succeed when based within the curriculum, Dr. Goodwin is currently in the early stages of developing a course, “Radical Theatre for Social Change.” The class will provide theoretical and ethical foundations, historical context and workshop training for college students. Internships will also be created with Denver artists who are versed in the praxis of community-based art and social justice.
