Featured Program

Tocqueville Imagining America
In 2009-10, Southern Oregon University embarked on a year long project entitled Tocqueville Imagining America. Celebrating the 175th anniversary of Alexis de Tocqueville’s monumental work Democracy in America, the project brings together students, faculty, and community members to discuss and debate the relevance of Tocqueville’s ideas for America today. In the fall a presentation to all new students emphasized Tocqueville’s views on individualism and civic engagement, and was followed immediately by a day of community service. Under the direction of the SOU Arts and Humanities Council, the Tocqueville Imagining America project organized lectures, discussions, courses, art exhibits, and other events using Tocqueville’s ideas as a springboard to conversations on American democracy. SOU faculty took the discussions on the road to Oregon communities as part of the Oregon Humanities Chautauqua Conversation series.  The year long project will culminate in spring 2010 with presentations of research conducted by faculty and students throughout the year.
