Syracuse University’s Chancellor, Nancy Cantor, will be hosting a pre-conference presidential roundtable for presidents and chancellors of Imagining America’s member campuses on October 4th, 2012. The meeting will focus on expanding public scholarship and research within the context of the American Commonwealth Partnership (ACP), a yearlong initiative promoting higher education as an agent of democracy and a public good.
The ACP, which coincides with the 150th anniversary of the Morrill Act—and echoes the spirit of that landmark legislation—had its public launch at the White House on Jan. 10 under the banner “For Democracy’s Future: Education Reclaims Our Civic Mission.” A broad alliance of educational, civic, philanthropic, and business groups, the ACP counts among its collaborators the White House Office of Public Engagement; the U.S. Department of Education; the Association of American Colleges and Universities; the American Democracy Project; Imagining America; Campus Compact; and other K-12 schools, higher education institutions, and associations.
The October 4 roundtable, scheduled from 5-7 p.m., will be at Syracuse University’s Lubin House, 11 East 61st St., in Manhattan. Imagining America’s 2012 conference formally begins the following day, and all attendees are encouraged to participate in all or part of this annual event, as well.
