David Hoffman is Assistant Director of Student Life for Civic Agency, and an instructor in Political Science, at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Building on his experiences as a community organizer, David worked with UMBC colleagues to develop BreakingGround, an initiative that seeds new civic courses, co-curricular experiences, and cultural practices while diminishing role distance among students, faculty and staff. His research has explored students’ growth as civic agents in the context of experiences, environments, and relationships they perceive as “real” rather than synthetic or scripted. He is committed to helping people envision and achieve institutional and cultural transformations that foster civic agency and democratic engagement. David was a member of the planning team for Imagining America’s 2015 national conference in Baltimore, and serves on the steering committee for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities’ American Democracy Project. He is a graduate of UMBC’s doctoral program in Language, Literacy & Culture, and of the Harvard Law School, Harvard Kennedy School, and UCLA.
