First organized in 2000, the Imagining America National Gathering is an annual convening of public scholars, artists, designers, students, and cultural organizers who are addressing the most pressing issues of our time. The gathering offers participants a multi-day immersive experience in which to connect, dialogue, learn, and strategize around the ways to build new knowledge and inspire collective imagination towards transformative education and action. This annual event is presented in a different city each year in partnership with a local host partner and steering committee.
In 2021, IA is replacing this large in-person convening with the production of a special issue of its multimedia journal Public and an online event to celebrate and learn from the diverse contributions to the forthcoming publication. To be held October 21-23, this year’s virtual program will offer performances, scholar and artist talks, participatory workshops, and networking opportunities for members of the IA consortium and beyond. Registration for the fall program will open in September.
We also invite you to save the dates for IA’s 2022 National Gathering in New Orleans, LA! After consultation with our local partners, we are excited to move forward with an in-person convening in this magical city, which will take place October 14-16, 2022. Building on a now several-year collaboration, the 2022 National Gathering will be organized in partnership with Tulane University, the Ashé Cultural Arts Center, and a New Orleans Steering Committee.
