Gen AI in the Classroom: Tips for Engaging Students in AI Classroom Policy

In this back-to-school edition of the Digital Divestment Roundtable, Marguerite Mayhall (Art History, Kean University) and Ashwin Vaidya (Math/Physics, Montclair State University, IA Member Institution), will introduce us to their pedagogical practice of engaging students around AI in the classroom through the lens of informed consent.

The conversation will address specific classroom practices, tips on adapting the existing classroom policy (see Prof. Vaidya’s adaptation of the original policy created by Prof. Mayhall), and solicit feedback from participants toward the creation of a IA toolkit around this student engagement resource. As always, there will be a chance for participants to share their own experiences with student-use of AI in the classroom during open discussion.

The Digital Divestment Roundtable is open to the entire IA community, and invites us to engage in the following questions: what impacts do we see emerging from our digital dependence in contemporary times? How has this integration into all aspects of our communications and education changed our work and increased our reliance? How has it impacted our environment, privacy/sovereignty, creativity/imagination? And where do we go from here?
