Huy Phan (he/him) is a PhD student in the Department of Linguistics at University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). His interdisciplinary research combines ethnographic fieldwork, anthropological linguistics, sociolinguistics, to ethnomusicology to examine linguistic practices and linguistic identity of the Tây Vietnamese community in Mekong Delta (Southern Vietnam). Huy’s current project, the Melody of Cửu Long, focuses on Tây oral literature (e.g. hát ru, hò, lý, nói thơ Vân Tiên), collaborating with the local performers of Vĩnh Long province (previously Bến Tre) to describe, document, and maintain this linguistic/artistic tradition. In the spare time, he enjoys practicing traditional Vietnamese music instruments, including đờn kìm and đờn cò.
